Trademe is a New Zealand home grown site created in 1999, in 2006 Trademe sold to Fairfax Newspapers. Trademe, trades literally thousands of items including electronics, clothing, furniture, toys games and more on the Trademe website. Trademe seems to be maintaining its market dominance in New Zealand and Trademe has a growing online auction and consumer to consumer trade and online auction business in Australia. Trademe Australia requires Australian trademe members to have a New Zealand bank account to use the trademe website.

Ebay was started in 1995 and now operates in over 30 countries. Ebay is a consumer to consumer online auction site and online shopping site that allows users to buy, sell or trade a huge variety of items on the ebay website. Ebay has grown into one of the largest online auction sites on the internet through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions such as Paypal a payment facility purchased in 2002 by ebay and shopping.com purchased in 2005 by ebay.

Ebay Australia has had its share of controversy however ebay remains the leading online auction and shopping site in Australia and it appears it would be difficult for any independent auction site to compete with in this competitive online auction space with ebay Australia.
